GM Recalling 100,000 SUVs for Seatbelts

General Motors is recalling almost 100,000 of its 2011 model year crossover SUVs because the front seatbelts could come loose in a crash. The models involved in the recall are the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Cadillac SRX compact. A total of 97,843 vehicles are involved in the recall.

The problem was discovered during seatbelt development tests in September where the seatbelt buckle anchor failed. The seatbelt buckle anchor is used on the driver and passenger side seatbelts.

While the seatbelts won’t fail on a first impact, GM spokesman Alan Adler said, they could fail during a secondary impact.

GM will begin mailing letters to owners of the vehicles in mid-January. Owners will be asked to bring the vehicles to a GM dealer to have the seatbelt buckles modified.

If you have seatbelt problems with any GM vehicle three or more times during your original or extended manufacturers warranty, you have rights and it is important to look into them to determine the remedies you are entitled to. GM Recalls 40,000 Chevrolet Corvettes for Steering Column Issue

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, General Motors has recalled over 40,000 Chevrolet Corvettes from model years 2005 and 2006 that have a tilt and telescoping steering column.

NHTSA explains that the repeated movement of the steering column may result into a signal interruption within the column. The action will thus illuminate the message “Service active handling System.” In rare instances, the malfunctioning may result in actuating one or more of the brakes and pull the Corvette to the right or left. Inability of the driver to take control of his vehicle may result into a fatal accident.

The steering wheel columns of the affected Chevrolet Corvette vehicles will be repaired by the GM dealers for free. The safety recall has already begun. The owners may contact Chevrolet at 800-630-2438 or GMC at 866-996-9463. They may also contact NHTSA’s vehicle safety hot line at 888-327-4236.

GM Recalls Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Saturn Ion Due to Fire Hazard

General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall for the following models:

  • 2006-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt’s
  • 2007 Pontiac G5′s
  • 2006-2007 Saturn Ion

NHTSA says in its alert: “General Motors is recalling certain model year 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of Arizona and Nevada; and model year 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and Saturn Ion vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada and Texas.

The plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly may crack. If either of these ports develops a crack, fuel will leak from the area. If the crack becomes large enough, fuel may be observed dripping onto the ground and vehicle performance may be affected.”

General Motors has provided phone numbers for consumers to call if they have additional questions or concerns. Chevrolet owners can call 800-630-2438; Saturn owners can call 800-972-8876; and Pontiac owners can call 800-620-7668. Or, owners of the affected vehicles can log on to www.gmownercenter.com for additional information.
