General Motors Recalls 2005-08 Pontiac Vibe

General Motors is recalling 161,754 2005-’08 Pontiac Vibes to correct a problem with the engine control module that could lead to engine stalling. The campaign is linked directly to last week’s recall by Toyota of more than 1.1 million Corolla and Matrix vehicles from the same model years. All three vehicles — Vibe, Corolla and Matrix — are based on the Corolla platform.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the engine control module on cars equipped with the 1ZZ-FE (LV6) engine and two-wheel drive “may have been improperly manufactured.”

NHTSA said that, in some cases, “the engine may not start or the engine could shut off while the vehicle is being driven.”

GM has not yet provided an owner notification schedule, but its dealers will correct the defective cars free of charge. Contact GM at 800-620-7668 or NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.

GM Recalls 40,000 Chevrolet Corvettes for Steering Column Issue

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, General Motors has recalled over 40,000 Chevrolet Corvettes from model years 2005 and 2006 that have a tilt and telescoping steering column.

NHTSA explains that the repeated movement of the steering column may result into a signal interruption within the column. The action will thus illuminate the message “Service active handling System.” In rare instances, the malfunctioning may result in actuating one or more of the brakes and pull the Corvette to the right or left. Inability of the driver to take control of his vehicle may result into a fatal accident.

The steering wheel columns of the affected Chevrolet Corvette vehicles will be repaired by the GM dealers for free. The safety recall has already begun. The owners may contact Chevrolet at 800-630-2438 or GMC at 866-996-9463. They may also contact NHTSA’s vehicle safety hot line at 888-327-4236.

If you have steering column problems three or more times during your original or extended manufacturers warranty, you have rights and it is important to look into them to determine the remedies you are entitled to. GM Recalls 2005-2007 Corvettes for Faulty Roof Panels

General Motors has issued a recall for thousands of Corvettes because it says the cars may have faulty adhesive that could cause their roofs to come off while driving.

According to a recall notice issued Monday, the recall affects 2005-07 model year Corvettes, and 2006-07 model year Z06 Corvettes. The cars that are part of the recall are equipped with removable roofs, according to the notice.

“If there is a partial separation, the driver may notice one or more symptoms, such as a snapping noise when driving over bumps, wind noise, poor roof panel fit, roof panel movement/bounce when a door or hatch is closed, or a water leak in the headliner,” the notice says.

WWJ says the recall includes more than 22,000 cars. GM is attempting to fix the potential problem by installing redesigned roof panels, according to The Detroit News.

The recall notice says those who are affected by the recall should call 1-888-327-4236 or visit http://safercar.gov.

General Motors Shutting Down Saturn

General Motors announced that they are shutting down their Saturn division after a deal with Penske Automotive Group fell through. Penske Automotive Group couldn’t find a manufacturer to supply it with new cars once General Motors’ current contract runs out in 2011. PAG had been negotiating with General Motors since early June.

General Motors chief executive officer Fritz Henderson issued a statement of deep regret on September 30th, saying:

Today we learned that Penske Automotive Group (PAG) has decided to terminate discussions with General Motors to acquire Saturn. This is very disappointing news and comes after months of hard work by hundreds of dedicated employees and Saturn retailers who tried to make the new Saturn a reality.

Production has ceased on all Saturn vehicles and GM expects the remaining stock of about 12,000 vehicles to be sold off within four (4) months.

While there was speculation that French automaker Renault had negotiated a deal with PAG to manufacture Saturn vehicles, the deal was ultimately rejected by PAG’s board of directors, fearing U.S. competition.

General Motors issued a statement:

As a result of PAG’s decision, we will be winding down the Saturn brand and dealership network, in accordance with the wind-down agreements that Saturn dealers recently signed with GM. Pursuant to the terms of those agreements, the wind down process will be determined and communicated shortly.

What does this mean for Saturn drivers and their warranties? According to the following statement by GM, current Saturn owners will be able to get parts and service at other General Motors dealerships:

Saturn customers and owners will continue to be able to purchase and have their vehicles serviced at Saturn retailers during this process. Once the wind down is complete, Saturn owners will still be able to have their vehicles serviced at other GM dealerships. We will be communicating with our customers very soon to explain the next steps in this process.

In addition, it’s important to note that all Saturn drivers still under manufacturers warranty are entitled to consumer protection under State Lemon laws and Federal Warranty laws if their repairs cannot be fixed despite repeated repair attempts.
