According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, General Motors has recalled over 40,000 Chevrolet Corvettes from model years 2005 and 2006 that have a tilt and telescoping steering column.
NHTSA explains that the repeated movement of the steering column may result into a signal interruption within the column. The action will thus illuminate the message “Service active handling System.” In rare instances, the malfunctioning may result in actuating one or more of the brakes and pull the Corvette to the right or left. Inability of the driver to take control of his vehicle may result into a fatal accident.
The steering wheel columns of the affected Chevrolet Corvette vehicles will be repaired by the GM dealers for free. The safety recall has already begun. The owners may contact Chevrolet at 800-630-2438 or GMC at 866-996-9463. They may also contact NHTSA’s vehicle safety hot line at 888-327-4236.
